Summer is right around the corner and kayaking is a great way to enjoy South Carolina’s beautiful outdoors. South Carolina State Parks, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the certified paddle sports instructors of ACA South Carolina are teaming up to get you started. As part of National Safe Boating Week, nationally certified ACA Kayak instructors are volunteering their time to offer you a special opportunity to take these classes for just $15.

Topics covered will include: Trip planning, preparation, and prevention, what equipment you should carry, parts of the boat and parts of the paddle, understanding how bulkheads/flotation help make you safer, how to properly carry & transport your boat, basic posture for full body paddling and boat control, basic paddling strokes, how to get in and get out of your boat safely, how to re-enter a kayak if you capsize in deep water (multiple methods for self and assisted rescue) how to empty a swamped boat, and how to tow a swimmer.

Program Date: May 18th, 10AM to 4PM
Meeting place: Cabin Lake parking lot
What to bring: Sunscreen, camp chair, water, bug spray, weather-appropriate quick dry clothing and shoes that won’t fall off, hat, sunglasses w/strap, and bring your lunch (we will break for lunch but all eat together). You may bring your own life jacket, paddle and kayak or use equipment and kayaks provided by the park.
