Exhibit: Legacies in Fiber

March 2, 2023 @ 8:30 am - 5:30 pm

The Center invites you to the gallery exhibition “Legacies in Fiber: The African American History Quilts of Dr. Marlene O’Bryant-Seabrook”.

Dr. Marlene O’Bryant-Seabrook, a third generation educator, held a BS from SC State College, MAT from The Citadel, and Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. She was a classroom teacher, central staff administrator, and, in 1975, became the first African American and one of only two women on The Citadel’s permanent faculty. O’Bryant-Seabrook had no familial quilters, but took an eight week quilting class in the 1980s and began exhibiting her quilts nationally in 1992. She approached quilting from the dual focus of an educator and an artist, often slipping ‘lessons’ into her quilts. She lectured throughout the country and her work appeared in numerous publications and was exhibited both nationally and internationally. She was one of 44 nationally recognized fiber artists invited to create a quilt honoring President Obama for an Inaugural exhibition at the Washington Historic Society.

This enriching exhibition will allow you a glimpse not only of the quilter herself, but black history in general. Whether you are driven by curiosity, or perhaps a crafter yourself, this is the event for you.
“They are MY gifts…I quilt because I feel a creative obligation to do so.” ~ Dr. Marlene O’Bryant-Seabrook.
