History On Tap Lecture Series

July 11, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

The Aiken County Historical Museum will be hosting three Summer HOT (History On Tap) lectures featuring three speakers that complement the “South Carolina: The Food We Celebrate” traveling exhibition that will be on display at the Aiken County Historical Museum this summer. Developed by the South Carolina State Museum and South Carolina Humanities, this new traveling exhibition and the three HOT speakers celebrate iconic foods from communities around South Carolina. Join us for an evening out that begins with tasting some of the food from each of the speaker’s books.

On Tuesday, June 13th, Dr. David Shields will present “Taste the State: Signature Foods of South Carolina, Recipes, and Their Stories”.

David Shields is a Carolina Distinguished Professor at the University of South Carolina. He works in three fields: Food Studies, the History of Photography, and Early American Literary and Cultural Studies. He has published award-winning books in all three areas. He edited the journal Early American Literature for a decade and was president of the Society of Early Americanists. His history of silent motion picture still photography, STILL (University of Chicago, 2013) won the Browne prized for the “best single work in American Popular Culture” in 2013. He chairs the Carolina Gold Rice Foundation, the non-profit that finds and restores lost grains, fruits, and vegetables – ingredients crucial to the current revival of southern cooking. He chairs Slow Food’s Ark of Taste for the South. His books include Southern Provisions, on the Creation and Revival of a Cuisine (2015), The Culinarians: Lives & Careers from the First Age of American Fine Dining (2017), Taste the State Signature Foods of South Carolina, Recipes, and Their Stories (2021) with Kevin Mitchell. He publishes a newsletter, Foodlore & More, with near-daily meditations on the history of food and its preparation – https://davidsanfordshields.substack.com/. For his work, Shields has won the Southern Foodways Alliance’s “Ruth Fertel Keeper of the Flame Award.” In 2018 he was a finalist for the James Beard book award in food scholarship.

The Summer HOT Lectures will take place on the Museum grounds or inside the Museum Ballroom (weather depending). Tickets are $30 per person/lecture. Each Summer HOT event begins at 6 pm with light bites and the talk will follow at 6:30 pm.

The Summer HOT Lecture Series is scheduled for June 13, July 11 and August 8, 2023.
