Redcliffe Plantation Open House
March 16 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Join Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site for a full day of programing at their Spring Open House Saturday, March 16th. Come for as much or as little as you want. Light refreshments will be provided. Fuse Mobile Food Truck will be available from 11am – 2:30pm to purchase food.
Schedule:
10am – Welcome & Introductions
10:10am – HBCU Archaeology Field School – Join students and their leadership, Dr. Alison McLetchie (SC State) and Dr. Kelly Goldberg (USC), to learn about their archaeological work at Redcliffe. Presentation followed by Q&A.
11am – Moving Forward – Redcliffe’s Interpreter and SCPRT’s Archaeologist will provide information about ways to incorporate archaeological findings in future interpretation and how this supports the site’s mission. Presentation followed by Q&A.
11:30am – Mansion Open House, Archaeology Site Tour and Lunch Break with Fuse Mobile Food Truck
2pm – “This is Our Home” Book Talk with Dr. Stewart – Dr. Whitney Stewart will discuss her recently published book “This Is Our Home: Slavery and Struggle on Southern Plantations” which features Redcliffe in one chapter. Dr. Stewart’s work focuses on exploring how enslaved people struggled to make home amid innumerable constraints and obstacles. By exploring the material remnants of the past, Stewart demonstrates how homemaking was a crucial part of the battle over slavery and freedom.
