The Heart of the Turf – Racing’s Black Pioneers
December 4, 2024 – January 17, 2025
This exhibit showcases select stories from the countless African Americans who forged their way in Kentucky and beyond from the era of slavery to the present, shaping today’s racing industry. Developed by Keeneland Library Exhibit Curator Roda Ferraro, “Black grooms, farriers, stable managers, trainers, owners, stewards and jockeys passed their hard-earned knowledge and skills down through the generations. By sharing their personal stories, past and present, we hope to highlight not only their triumphs but also examine their obstacles to continue conversations about diversity in racing.”

The Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum and The Center for African American History, Art and Culture are partnering to provide this exhibit.

The Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame & Museum is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 2pm – 5pm, Saturdays from 10am – 5pm, and Sundays from 2pm – 5pm. Admission is free.
